Do you know the reason why?
I am sure most of the Marwari don’t know the actual reason behind this. It was around 1899, when famine hit the Marwar region. The maharaja of Jodhpur decided to help people for their survival. He offered food and water to all those people who will work to build a new palace for them. The King thought the situation will be better in few years and the community will survive this situation. But the famine stayed for longer time than expected. The new palace was ready (although it was not needed) and royal cash reserves were getting exhausted. So their community had a meeting and decided few things in that meeting.
1. All the Marwari will leave there home to search jobs or business opportunities in different places.
2. The weakest, incompetent or lazy one will stay back at home to look after the family property and remaining all will move.
3. All the remaining people will move in different directions to find better opportunities to do business.
4. The unique condition which was accepted by everyone was that no Marwari will do business or work, where any Marwari is already doing business. It was because the existing Marwari must have come from hardships and to avoid competition among the community members they all agreed. That’s how Marwari community spread across India in every single district. They made a promise to visit their hometown atleast once a year during (mostly) Diwali to meet each other and share the learning of business with their siblings back home. That’s how you will find them better businessmen than rest any other caste in India. In almost 100 years this community left a huge impact all over the world and this is one of the biggest community listed among the wealthiest people list. Today Marwari dominates almost every sector and imagine they found opportunity from a disaster. I am sure, even most of the Marwaris didn’t know this story behind their success.
